Required Safety Glazing Standards:
Approved Document N
When measuring, you must take into account
the required use of safety glass in certain areas. The following
chart indicates where glass use is a potential hazard and
safety glass must be used. When completing your WINDOW or
DOOR SCHEDULE, please mark “T” to indicate Toughened
Glass and identify this when you discuss your project with
our CUSTOMER SERVICE TEAM MEMBER.
Providing
Means of Escape: Approved Document B
Current Building Regulations require
windows in upstairs habitable rooms – Bedrooms, Home
Office, but not Bathrooms – to have adequate fire escape
facilities.
There should be at least one opening window or door section
in each room which allows a minimum of 0.33m2 or approximately
450mm width and 750mm height. Affected openers should have
a “fire egress hinge” fitted as standard, which
allows the hinge to move the opening sash to one side, increasing
the exit size. Additionally, the foot of the opening must
be within 1100mm of floor level to facilitate easy exit.
Ventilation: Approved Document
F
Rapid ventilation means that adequate
ventilation to a room must be achieved to at least the previous
standard of windows being replaced. Trickle ventilation can
assist in these situations and is advisable in bathrooms,
kitchens and rooms with pre-disposed condensation problems.
Insulation: Approved Document
L
Since April 2002, Building Control Standards
has required varying insulation values, calculated as U-Values,
to achieve heat-retaining qualities in windows and doors.
Our windows and doors exceed all standards required and as
it is statutory to install replacement windows which meet
compliance standards, all products manufactured by us are
made to those standards as standard, so no further action
is required on the part of our customers.
