Self-Fit Guide

1.0 Safety
Window removal and installation can be a dangerous procedure and precautions should be observed at all times. It is recommended that when handling broken glass, thick gloves and safety goggles are worn and suitable workwear is used. Removed materials must be disposed of correctly. If in any doubt, you should contact a Customer Services Team Member or your local Environmental Heath Officer at your local Council Office.

2.0 Removal Techniqies – Timber Windows
Provision should be made for protective sheets to the outside and inside of each window or door to be removed. This will protect the environment from glass and material shards and makes the cleaning-up operation far easier.

Most casement windows are installed from the outside of the building and box-sash windows are installed from the inside of the building. Consequently, removal takes place likewise to minimise damage to the building and internal plaster work.
1. Run a sharp knife between the inside face of the existing frame and the plaster work.
2. Run a sharp knife through the mastic or silicone pointing (if any), between the outside face of the existing frame and the house brick work.
3. Remove opening sashes by levering screws/hinges from the outer frame work.
4. Remove glass from fixed lights carefully by breaking the glass towards the outside of the frame work. Use of a glass gutter and retaining tape may be used, if required.

5. Cut through mullions (uprights) and transoms (horizontals) at the angles shown below.
6. Cut through the outer frame work as shown and carefully lever the sections away from brick work. Nails or screw retainers are usually easily removed with the timber sections. Stubborn materials may have to be subsequently removed by claw-hammer or angle-grinder.
7. Existing internal window boards are normally unaffected and may be retained. Care should be taken to check for nail attachments to the window frame work. Upvc cover boards, applied to existing timber window boards, and solid upvc replacement window boards are available as extras. Please check the “Accessories” section of this web site for further information.
